After the Journal Impact Factor now comes the Eigenfactor

Scientists are evaluated by their contribution to knowledge. To make a contribution to knowledge, publishing original and relevant papers in high-standard journals is indispensable. For educated decisions about selecting high-standard journals, and gauging the prestige and influence of the journals, Journal Citation Report (JCR), published by Thomson Scientific, USA, is a very good tool. The JCR uses the Journal Impact Factor (JIF), along with other criteria, to compare, evaluate and rank journals. The JIF is a measure applied to a journal. It is a measure of frequency with which the "average article" has been cited in a particular year or period. Journals with high impact factor seem to have a higher reputation than journals with low impact factor. JIF tells how many citations an author can expect for his paper, provided it is of average quality. There are limitations and biases of the impact factor published in JCR. For example, by merely counting the frequency of citations per article and disregarding the prestige of the citing journals, the impact factor becomes merely a metric of popularity, not of prestige. Despite the recognition that the impact factor was an imperfect measure, scholars and others were forced to use this tool for journal comparison, as there was no alternative measure until a few years ago. Now many alternative tools are available free on the Internet. Of these, Eigenfactor (http://www.eigenfactor.org/) has been selected to inform our readers the benefits of using this program.

The Eigenfactor, developed by a group out of the University of Washington, USA led by Carl Bergstrom, seeks to rank journals not just by impact but by value for money. The Eigenfactor takes into account the network of citations that exists among journal articles. Eigenfactor.org provides an Article Influence score which is more similar to the Impact Factor. By this approach, it identifies the most 'influential' journals, where a journal is considered to be influential if it is cited often by the other influential journals (Bergstorm, C. 2007). For example, Cell has an Article Influence of 17.037 and an Eigenfactor of 0.65975, both of which are in the 99th percentile.

The following points show how Eigenfactor is better than Journal Impact Factor (JIF):

  1. JIF is calculated by using the citation data from 8000 or so journals indexed by Thomson Scientific while potentially any journal could be included in Eigenfactor;
  2. JIF is calculated based on the most recent 2-year's worth of citation data; Eigenfactor is based on the most recent 5 years;
  3. In collaboration with journalprices.com, Eigenfactor provides information about price and value for thousands of scholarly periodicals.
  4. It ignores self-citation in order to avoid over-inflating journals that engage in the practice of opportunistic self-citation;
  5. Eigenfactor is Free!
