Google Book Search

While the public authorities slept, Google Book Search took the initiative to create the largest library and the largest book business that have ever existed. Four years ago, Google, the world's top search giant, started digitizing books from the libraries of Harvard, Stanford, the University of Michigan, the University of Oxford, and the New York Public Library and making the digital surrogates available on the Internet. As of November 2008, Google had scanned about 7 million books through a partnership with these libraries. In exchange, Google has promised to give each library a single free terminal for patrons to read the books, but not print or copy any of the works. For broader access, libraries would have to pay an institutional subscription fee that has not yet been determined.

In September and October 2005, a group of authors and publishers brought a class of action suit against Google, alleging violation of copyright. Last 28 October 2008, after lengthy negotiations, the opposing parties announced agreement on a settlement, which is subject to approval by the US District Court for the Southen District of New York. The settlement creates an enterprise known as the Book Rights Registry(BRR) to represent the interests of the copyright holders. Google will sell the access to a gigantic data bank composed primarily of copyrighted, out of print books digitized from the research libraries. Google will retain 37 percent, and the BRR will distribute 63 percent of the access fee among the right holders. [Darnton, R. 2009. May 5, 2009]

Initially it is displaying only bibliographic information and a few snippets of books still in copyright. For books in the public domain, you will actually get to page through the full text on Google Book Search.

Our readers are requested to browse Google Book Search and reap the maximum benefit from it.
